Study on the ecosystem services of urban forests: implications for climate change mitigation in the case of Adama City of Oromiya Regional Sate, Ethiopia

This study was conducted to explore the ecosystem services of urban forests in Adama city, central Ethiopia. Attempts were made quantify carbon storage and sequestration, air pollution removal hydrological benefits trees. The forest structure composition city surveyed analyzed. i-Tree Eco Model employed analyze based on current city. result revealed that trees stored a total 116,000 tons carbon. tree species identified with higher CO2 sequestration per year Melia azedarach (15%), Eucalyptusglobulus (8%), Carica papaya (7%), Delonix regia (6%). In addition, 22%, 12%, 10% 4% by Eucalyptus globulus, azedarach, respectively. Moreover, shrubs removed about 188 thousand pollutants caused O3, CO, NO2, PM2.5 SO2 year. Adama, 35% trees’ volatile organic compaound emissions from cinerea globulus. monetary value terms storage, estimated 43,781, 3,121 yr−1 320,915,596 USD yr−1, It concluded significant quantity found being exotic shrub species. However, every plant does not mean ecologically important due their VOC emitting nature. Thus, results are valuable increasing awareness decision making bodies, public any stakeholders eco-benefits mitigation climate changes.
